Fun Christmasy thought exercise: The mushroom pictured is the Fly Agaric (Amanita Muscaria). Legend has it that the Fly Agaric is deeply connected with Santa and Reindeer. Everything from the reindeer eating them in order to fly, to reindeer being the spirit animals, even shamans, who would deliver gifts, to Santa himself being a shaman. These mushrooms are often found at the base of pine trees trees, like the gifts we place today.
