Hey :) This more personal blog post is inspired by behaviour expert Chase Hughes - starting small and realising that our lives are built on habits, not goals.
Before we go on, I just want to say a personal thank you for being here this year. Wishing you the warmest happiness and success in 2025.
Here’s the main idea:
Focus on habits that naturally lead to the results you want, rather than chasing goals outright. Oh, and there’s a fun tip about how to communicate change to your dog!
What are the habits that make goals a byproduct?
When it comes to goals, think of them as byproducts of consistent habits.
Instead of focusing on the goal itself, ask:
- What byproducts do I want this year?
- What habits will create those byproducts?
Examples:
- The Byproduct: Staying healthy and rarely getting sick.
- The Habit: Drinking medicinal mushrooms regularly.
Before I started drinking medicinal mushrooms, I used to get chest infections. Now, even when something gets in, I feel my body working on it though it doesn’t "manifest".
- The Byproduct: Feeling strong and healthy.
- The Habit: Regular movement, training, and lifting weights.
At first, I had to push myself a little, but eventually, the gym stopped feeling like a discipline—it became a habit.
Start small with micro-habits, and let them grow into bigger ones.
Discipline might be needed get you started, then allow healthy habits to set in that create lasting change.
A Bonus Tip: Communicating Change to Your Dog!
Chase Hughes shares this great metaphor: How would you communicate to your dog that things are changing?
The answer: Change the environment.
Make your space reflect your new habits:
- Create a vision board.
- Swap out old routines, like the first thing you do in the morning.
- Update your fridge, tea cupboard, or even the layout of your home.
When your surroundings reflect your intentions, it’s easier to stick with new habits and see your goals as natural byproducts.
Wishing you a year full of amazing byproducts from small, powerful habits.
With love,
Rich :)
