Vegan Protein Powder UK: What to Actually Look For on the Label

The UK vegan / plant protein powder market is crowded, and most brands put a big number on the front of the tub and leave it at that. That number matters, but it's not the whole story, and there's a few things worth actually checking before you buy.

Where the protein comes from

Pea and hemp protein are the two most common bases, and blending them together (rather then using just one) generally gives a more complete amino acid profile, since neither is perfect alone. Our Plain Jane blends hemp and pea specifically for this reason.

What else is in there

Flip the tub over and check the ingredients list, not just the nutrition panel. A lot of protein powders pad out flavour with artificial sweeteners or gums that can cause bloating. Look for a shorter ingredients list, and ideally one that includes digestive enzymes, which help your body actually break down and use the protein rather then it passing through unused.

Taste and mixability

This sounds minor but it's the actual reason most people stop using a protein powder, not the ingredients. A powder that clumps in water or tastes chalky won't get used consistently, no matter how good it looks on paper.
